Angklung Brings a Lovely Sound

Do You know Angklung?


Angklung is one of the famous cultures for Sundanese people. This slendro music equipment classed as middle hight was formed by the instrument made from bamboo, Sometime people also made shaking Angklung that usually has the relative smaller size.

This music equipment grew rapidly in Sunda (Wes Java) The term Angklung was derived from Bali Mitology. In Bali Language Angklung derived from word "Angk" means "sound" and "Lung" means "Lost or uncompleted". According to those two words Angklung then defined as The Lost sound or uncompleted Sound. Balinese people called it as "Cumang Kirangyang" that means "The Four Less Tones of Sound"

People said, this bamboo musical instrument was created as an accompaniment of music for the poem or the shape of appreciation of thanks for the blessing that was given by Goddess Sri "The Life Owner" (partly mentioned her as the Rice Owner Goddess) or was known as "Mrs. Sri Pohaci". The poems or lyrics were sung out as a respect to Mrs. Sri Pohaci when Sundanese people managed cultivate their agricultural land. Moreover this symbolize of respect to Mrs. Sri Pohaci with poem and instrumented by Angklung was believed could increase their harvest in the future. Besides, lt also believed as the way to avoid failure in the next period of croping.

Moreover, in several subdistricts of Bandung like Soreang Subdistrict and the Pangalengan Subdistrict, Angklung is used in Procession of the traditional ceremony of "Nyungkruk Hulu Wotan" (They walk along the river upstream). In this ceremony usually the community brings much food. After arriving at the river upstream, They held a ceremony with a ritual offering and incense. They prayed to his ancestors while sacrificeing a goat. The head of the goat was buried together with the ritual offering that was led by an elder villager. After eating together then go home while play the angklung.

There are many kinds of Angklung in West Java such as; Baduy Angklung, Dogdog Lojor Angklung, Gubrag Angklung, Badeng Angklung, Buncis Angklung, Bungko Angklung and Soetigna Angklung .

In Bali, Angklung is not only played in ritual of sacrificing but also in burning death people known as "Ngaben"
